Job summary

Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals to join our friendly and dynamic team of four oncology Specialty Doctors. This is an exciting time to join the team as a new, purpose-built, Cancer Centre was opened in early 2020 and a brand new Oxford University Radiotherapy Centre opened in early 2025 on site at MKUH providing fantastic facilities for our Oncology patients. This post offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join a rapidly growing Oncology service. We are seeking a candidate who has good clear communication skills, works well in a team environment and has good attention to detail ; support and training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with all of our Oncology Consultant providing clinic and ward support to ensure continuity of care for all Oncology patients within Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust and to develop and to enhance the care and service offered in oncology, medical oncology experience is essential and radiotherapy experience is desirable for this post.

The post holder will deliver and support high standards of clinical care both as a direct care giver and indirectly through the support and education of the wider workforce.

Our modern Cancer Centre provides a chemotherapy suite, outpatient consulting rooms, treatment areas, a ward for oncology and haematology patients and a Wellbeing Service. This developing service is supported by a forward thinking & supportive Management Team, Nurse Practitioners, Palliative Care Team & Macmillan Information and Support Centre.

We firmly believe in holistic care, complementary therapy, clinical psychology and Citizen Advice Bureau all have clinics in the unit. We also offer careers and patient support groups.

Job responsibilities

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Work

- Medical assessments daily for both pre/post chemotherapy patients ongoing for duration of treatment

- Daily prescribing and supporting of nurse led services

- Review of Acute Oncology inpatients following emergency admission

- Provide medical cover for adverse reactions/identify clinical risks within the chemotherapy unit

- Support Oncology unit with possible complications and Neutropenia assessment of walk in patients

- Attendance of specialist MDTs

- Provide oncology support and visibility across the trust

- Dissemination of knowledge to junior colleagues

- Integrate within all site specific cancers

- Undertake Outpatient Clinics as required

- Review of chemotherapy patient laboratory results and liaise with pharmacy staff accordingly, prescribe chemotherapy, immunotherapy, target therapy and hormone therapy as required.

- Review and assess patients post Radiotherapy

- Participation of the on call rota

Managerial

- Review current service and prioritise ongoing needs for development

- Establish contacts/outreach advice/support (GPs etc)

- Support complex treatments ongoing in chemotherapy suite

- Co-ordination of repatriation of regimen

- Attend Network Site Specific groups as appropriate

- Support nursing/AHP teams

- Participate in Audits and Mortality meetings

- Engage in research and development

- Support and supervise medical students allocated to oncology

- Maintain CPD and GMC revalidation requirements

- Work with Cancer Services team to support the national chemotherapy agenda in relation to Peer Review, NCAG etc.
