CT/MRI Specialist Radiographer

Band 6 - £38,682 - £46,580 pro rata if part-time
Hours: 37.5 pw, 12 months fixed term, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
Are you a passionate radiographer looking to take the next step in your career? This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing Imaging Department at Milton Keynes University Hospital, where you'll help shape and expand our CT and MRI services as part of a vibrant, forward-thinking team.
We're looking for an enthusiastic and motivated radiographer with a commitment to excellent patient care and professional development. Working alongside our dedicated multidisciplinary team, you'll gain valuable experience across a wide range of CT and MRI procedures, including cardiac CT, CT colonography, MSK, Neuro, angiography, and dynamic studies.
Our Imaging Department is home to state-of-the-art equipment, including:
- Two Siemens 1.5T MRI scanners on-site
- One GE 1.5T Voyager MRI scanner at our Community Diagnostic Centre
- Three Canon CT scanners on-site
And with a brand-new Imaging Scanning Centre opening in Spring 2026, there's never been a better time to join us.
As part of this 12-month fixed-term role, you'll contribute to delivering a high-quality, patient-focused diagnostic service while supporting and mentoring students and junior staff. You'll also have opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge through ongoing CPD and hands-on experience.

To work a rotation through the MRI and CT departments conducting cross- sectional examinations using a range of MRI and CT equipment upon various patient types; both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi-professional team, in a manner that meets profession, departmental and legal standards and requirements.
To proactively assist in the management of the MRI and CT scanning departments on a daily basis whilst fostering a safe and efficient environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
To actively supervise and teach radiographers new to MRI and/or CT, student radiographers and imaging assistants and to actively help, teach and support training Specialty doctors in radiology.
Ensure patient safety is maintained and patient experience is positive by treating all patients, relatives and colleagues with respect, dignity, and courtesy in accordance with Trust values.

Job responsibilities
Clinical:
1. Work unsupervised, performing all CT, MR scans following imaging parameters set down in scanning protocols.
2. Liaise with referral source where clarification is required regarding the selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination and prioritise cases by urgent clinical need.
3. Act as a professional resource regarding CT, MR procedures for other directorate staff and clinical colleagues.
Operational Responsibilities:
1. Liaise with other departments / wards within the hospital and various external sources to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians. Keeping them informed of any delays to patient throughput, which might result because of, for example excessive workload.
2. Create, maintain, and enhance working relationships with wards, clinicians, and staff.
3. Act as a point of advice for patient enquiries regarding their referral.
4. To work closely with specialist groups e.g., anaesthetics and intensive care to ensure that they operate in a safe manner in the CT/MRI controlled area.
Managerial responsibilities:
1. Deputise in the absence of senior staff such as section heads for CT & MR or band 7 radiographers and be responsible for the smooth day to day running of the CT & MRI department.
2. Be familiar with the range of technical applications available on imaging equipment.
3. Monitor and report equipment faults and to determine the severity of the problem and its probable impact on the workload. To make a balanced judgement on when to call in a service engineer, considering the effect on the normal running of the CT/ MR Service.
Communication:
1. To assess specific communication needs of individual patients. To anticipate where communication difficulties might make completion of the MRI safety checklist impossible and implement alternative methods to ensure that patient safety is maintained.
2. Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination.
Analytical and Judgmental Skills:
1. Use analytical and judgement skills with regard to the interpretation of clinical information. Advise radiologists of the technical capabilities of the CT and MRI scanners and suggest appropriate sequences to better demonstrate a variety of common pathologies.
Responsibilities for Human Resources:
1. To assist in the supervision and clinical instruction of undergraduate radiographic staff.
2. To undertake formalised assessments of undergraduate students and document findings in accordance with each academic institutions requirements.
3. To supervise and act as trainer for rotating radiographic staff.
4. Deliver appropriate structured / informal training to radiographic colleagues, other members of the trust and students on work experience, as appropriate.

- BSc (Hons) Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent
- Health and Care Professions Council Registration
- Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy (MS Teams, word, outlook, power point and excel)
- Familiarity with hospital information systems (HIS), radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archiving communications systems (PACS)
- Knowledge of a wide range of diagnostic imaging procedures
- Evidence of keeping informed of the current CT/ MRI imaging techniques and practices
- Knowledge of relevant national imaging standards (e.g., IR(ME)R 2017, IRR '17 and associated codes of practice)
