Job summary
Applicants are invited to apply for a Specialty Doctor in Microbiology post at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) NHS Foundation Trust to start as soon as possible for 12-months in the first instance; however there may be a potential opportunity to extend this post in future.
This Specialty doctor in Microbiology will be a junior grade doctor under supervision. It is envisaged that this post would be suitable for a doctor with 2 years postgraduate experience who would be interested in exploring infection specialties as a career option or for a doctor with specialist microbiology / infection experience overseas looking to gain UK experience before embarking on further specialist training and certification in UK. This post offers 10 programmed activities. The job plan will be tailored to suit the experience and needs of the appointee and the department.
The successful applicants will join the team of 2.5 full time Consultants to provide a comprehensive Microbiology and Infection Prevention and Control service to the local population of 270,000 in and around MK city.
The Microbiology laboratory is very friendly and welcoming, equipped with modern laboratory equipment and in the process of obtaining UKAS accreditation.
Applicants should possess the MBBS or equivalent qualification and be registered or eligible for registration with GMC at the time of appointment.
Main duties of the job
Laboratory Work
Duties as appropriate to the grade of the post under the direction of the consultants responsible including:
o Duty Microbiologist role for clinical advice
o Supervision of the laboratory Microbiology service.
o Supervision of and participation in further processing of specimens and interpretation of results.
o Authorisation and interpretation of results
o Ward rounds and referral service as necessary.
o Participation in teaching, research, audits as necessary.
o Attendance by agreement at the Microbiology Clinical/ management Meeting and Clinical Improvement Group (CIG) meetings.
Clinical Responsibilities
Taking routine clinical calls and communication of critical results
Attendance at Microbiology antibiotic ward rounds
Attendance to Haematology and other MDTs
Daily ITU ward rounds with consultant on call
Attendance at the Infection prevention and control (IPC) meetings
Participation in Clinical Grand Round on Wednesday afternoon (expected)
Participation in day-to-day Infection Control activities
Participation in Infection control meetings, AMS Committee meetings and others as necessary
Participate in Public Health Duties: liaison with the Regional PHE laboratory and PHE who will provide support in reporting outbreaks, cluster of cases and any other SI to the appropriate authorities.
