An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Assistants to join our existing Paediatric team to assist in delivering high quality patient focused care to our children, young people and their families across our Paediatric Assessment Unit and Paediatric Day Surgery Unit.
These Band 2 roles will require someone who is able to effectively manage their time and who loves a challenge. The successful candidates will need to be competent, caring, courageous, and compassionate, with a special interest in the care of babies, children and young people as well as their families.
The role involves supporting the Nursing Staff on our unit: this may involve completing clinical observations on children, meeting personal hygiene needs, ensuring our children eat and drink, documenting care as well as ensuring that the unit is clean and tidy, and stores are ordered and put away. You will need to be computer literate and a good knowledge of IT systems will be useful, however training will be provided.
Main duties of the job
- To assist and support nursing staff, children and families, in line with training and skills acquired under the direction of trained Nurses
- Act as support to nursing staff at all times by assisting when requested within your training limitations.
- Ensure the comfort of children and families within the department
- Under the direction of nursing staff assist with non-nursing care of children
- Assist in the orientation of all new staff members, train staff regarding the cleaning and resetting of equipment.
- To communicate effectively and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- To maintain own standard of care
- Use of IT systems to admit and discharge patients as required
As part of this role, you might be asked to support any paediatric area across MKUH.

- Report any complaints or untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the shift.

- Accompany children and parents to other departments when requested by nurse in charge, i.e. X-ray Department.
Domestic/Environmental
- Assist the staff to keep the ward environment clean and tidy.
- Report any faulty equipment, to EBME and inform the nurse in charge of the shift.
- Record temperature of fridges daily in kitchen, drug room, and cubicles where appropriate and take action if temperature outside limits.
- Assist in the ordering, checking, unpacking and storage of stores and equipment for kitchen and store cupboard.
- Check and clean commodes ensuring they have a I am clean" label.
- Assist in annual stock take of equipment and stores.
- Cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
- Clean and remake beds as required.
