Same Day Emergency Care Health Care Assistant

Band 2 £22,383 per annum

Hours per week 37.5 hours (full time); all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Assistant to join the Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) in Maple Centre to join our dedicated and dynamic Ambulatory Emergency Care team which provides same-day emergency care for patients at our hospital. This means that patients are assessed, treated and are able to go home the same day without being admitted overnight.

It is a way of providing safe care, designed for the needs of the patient. The service also aims to prevent unnecessary admissions and provide a better experience for patients.

The post holder will be supporting all nursing staff to deliver the highest standards of care in SDEC. The postholder will be closely working with other specialist services such as Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT), Veno-thromboembolism (VTE), Anticoagulant Bridging Clinic, Frailty Team and Emergency Surgical Clinic (ESC) and administrative staff.

Main duties of the job

The role of the HCA is to assist the nursing team in the delivery of safe and effective care to the patient. The role is vital in ordering and maintaining safe levels of high-cost disposables.

  • To assist all team members in the direct delivery of patient care i.e. checking blood sugars, feeding patient, assisting in hygiene and toileting need
  • To have knowledge of basic clinical observations
  • To be competent in the process of decontamination of medical equipment
  • To assist in the induction of new staff within the department
  • To organise own daily workload, adjusting priorities appropriately as the department activity dictates
  • To ensure that patients relatives needs are met in a courteous, helpful and compassionate manner
  • To ensure all visitors to the department are dealt with in a courteous and helpful manner
  • To demonstrate a pro-active approach to maintaining overall tidiness and cleanliness of the department
  • To take responsibility for monitoring stock levels of disposables and managing a system of ordering that ensures adequate levels of stock at all times
