Pharmacy Procurement Technician - Procurement & Distribution

Pharmacy

Band 6 £ 35,392 to £ 42,618 pro rata if part-time

Hours: 37.5 per week

After significant investment, the Pharmacy Department has grown and developed into a modern technological service that actively invites change to drive improvement.

We are now looking for a dynamic Pharmacy Technician with extensive experience in procurement and logistics to enhance our expanding department. Managing a team, you will ensure compliance with WDA and Home Office regulations to provide an outstanding service to all our customers.

This will include:

  • Running a daily ordering schedule to ensure adequate and timely supply of medicines.
  • Application and audit of NHS-England CMU contracts, ensuring and maintaining CIPS.
  • Investigation of stock issues, maintaining regulatory documentation.
  • Training of staff on pharmacy procurement and regulatory standards.
  • Line manager responsibilities, acting senior duties.
  • Dispensing and final check of products for inpatients, outpatients and discharge.
  • Participation in weekend and Bank Holiday rota.

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive and efficient daily procurement service to the trust developing and updating services; following all legal and departmental practices including Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs), MHRA Rules and Guidance for Pharmaceutical Distributors, COSHH, Lifting and Handling Regulations and all Trust Policies and Procedures.

To assist the Chief Technician and Pharmacy Business Manager with development of cost improvements to the department and trust.

Trust Responsibilities

  • To lead the day to day operational management of the procurement and distribution activities to ensure the safe and efficient supply of pharmaceutical products to be used for treating patients and to support ward-staff in the effective management of medicines.
  • To provide information to the Chief Technician - Operations and Procurement Services Manager on all aspects of the elements of the pharmacy service that they lead.
  • To communicate effectively and promptly with all members of the pharmacy teams and, where necessary, clinical multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of medicines management/optimisation and supply services to patients and colleagues across the health system.

Professional Responsibilities

  • To raise orders using the Pharmacy computer system Careflow Medicines Management (CMM), and ensure the placing of these with relevant suppliers, in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • To process electronic orders through the EDI systems, and to help develop and maintain systems of electronic invoice reconciliation.

Education and Training

  • To assist Senior Pharmacy Technicians in the induction and training of Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists, Pre-Registration Pharmacists, Pre-Registration Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants and other staff as appropriate within the purchasing and distribution areas.
  • To supervise and direct pharmacy staff ensuring that acts and duties are carried out in accordance with agreed procedures, local policies and official directives.
  • Training and compliance of specified staff to Wholesaler Dealer Authorisation (WDA) standards.

Management

  • To ensure that technical staff comply with Trust Human Resources policies with respect to delegated responsibility, disciplinary procedures, recruitment and retention of staff.
  • To monitor performance of all managed staff by regular use of appraisal in accordance with Trust procedure and paperwork covering personal development plans and pay progression meeting.

Miscellaneous

  • To carry out other duties as requested by senior staff.
  • To seek advice and instruction from more experienced or specialised staff when necessary.
  • To participate in local roster arrangements covering weekend duty and bank holiday as required.
  • To work, if and when required, in other sections of the Pharmacy in order to maintain the pharmaceutical services to the Trust, and to undertake other duties as required by the Chief Technician or Clinical Director of Pharmacy including manufacturing of pharmaceutical products and cytotoxic preparations using aseptic technique in isolators and laminar flow cabinets.

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician supported by evidence of CPD in line with GPhC requirements
  • BTEC / NVQ level 3 or equivalent
  • Accredited Checking Technician
  • Knowledge of procurement legislation and policies, acquired through basic qualification plus specialist training or experience
  • Knowledge of WDA (H) and RP regulations/GDP
  • Management Qualification
  • Evidence of ability to plan and organise complex activities or programmes of work requiring planning and adjustment to meet changing needs
