Trust Fire Safety Advisor

Department: Estates Services Department

Band 6: £35,392 to £42,618 full time

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

The Estates Services Department is seeking a Trust Fire Safety Advisor to support the delivery of a safe Hospital for all users. We are looking for someone who has good knowledge of fire safety in a hospital setting, fire risk management, fire risk assessing and auditing, fire legislation including codes or practise, fire safety training, who can support Strategic Estate and Project Development plans, and advise end users on fire safety.

Main duties of the job

  1. The key focus of this role is to lead as specialist advisor to the Trust on all matters concerning Fire Safety.
  2. Provide technical advice in relation to fire safety matters to assist the Fire Safety Manager fulfil their duties effectively.
  3. Designated competent person within fire safety as defined in fire safety legislation, and is employed to assist the Trust in fulfilling its legal responsibilities in relation to fire safety matters.
  4. Provide interpretation and application of the provisions of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, Firecode and other official guidance and legislation in respect of fire safety.
  5. The post holder will be responsible for undertaking a program of suitable and sufficient fire risk assessments throughout the Trust using electronic software Safesmart.
  6. To provide competent Trustwide fire safety advice to staff.
  7. To develop and deliver a program of fire awareness training to all staff and volunteers.
  8. To ensure compliance with fire safety legislation and Firecode across the Estate.

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct fire risk assessments using electronic software Safesmart or similar, of spaces occupied by the Trust, including off site premises and housing, in compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, HTM 05, and updating risk assessments on a scheduled basis.
  2. Ensure fire risk assessments schedule on Monday.com or similar software is kept up to date.
  3. Ensure actions arising from fire risk assessments completed on SafeSmart are allocated by the Fire Safety Advisor, to Wards / Department Managers, Estates, Contractors as appropriate, and the Fire Safety Advisor will track the actions until they are satisfactorily completed.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
  1. To assist the Estates Manager in the appraisal of services both in-house and contracted, to ensure the Trust receives best value for money.
  2. To ensure that expenditure is controlled within the areas of responsibility and that budgetary allocations are not exceeded, producing regular reports on spend Vs budget.
  3. To raise technical purchase orders and act as signatory for invoice payments.
PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. To maintain effective channels of communication within the department between Management, staff and other hospital departments.
  2. To maintain effective channels of communication within the Trust between Management, staff, contractors, visitors.
  3. To work openly with other staff within the department to ensure technical information is recorded and disseminated through the various disciplines as required.

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential

  • Educated to a minimum of HNC (level 4) in a fire related discipline or be able to demonstrate substantial fire safety experience
  • Fire Service or NHS Fire Safety Advisor background.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current fire safety legislation, Firecode and associated guidance documents
  • Apply the correct fire safety strategy solutions to passive and active fire precautions.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)

Desirable

  • Membership of the IFE or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of the NHS
  • Development of fire safety policies in a secure healthcare environment

Experience

Essential

  • Fire safety experience within the NHS or other large public sector organisations.
  • Experience in the application of fire safety legislation, Firecode and other fire related guidance documents.
  • Ability to assess, develop and deliver comprehensive fire training programmes based on relevant training needs analysis
  • Experience in competently assessing and documenting fire related risk
