Trauma Sister/Coordinator

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a registered nurse with trauma and orthopaedic experience to join our dynamic Trauma Assessment Unit (TAU) Team. The role involves the coordination of care of trauma patients and their surgeries, working closely with the on-call consultants, registrars, doctors, the site team, anaethetic team, theatre teams, ward teams, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, ortho-geriatrician team.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated specialist nurse with the ability to demonstrate good organisational, leadership and communication skills.

You will be the key link in effective communication of the trauma patients both within the hospital and at home, with an ability to multi-task and communicate effectively within a vast multi-disciplinary team.

You will provide support to patients with complex injuries and wounds on the wards, providing education for ward teams.

The role also involves working within the TAU outpatient department where collaborative assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of trauma and orthopaedic injuries and conditions take place within a same day emergency care setting. You will also be required to support with minor procedures and local anaesthetic surgeries within the treatment room within the unit.

You have experience working in an acute hospital setting with current NMC registration.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will:

• Lead the progression of orthopaedic trauma patients through agreed clinical pathways, ensuring care is underpinned by evidence-based practice.
• Coordinate and champion the Hip Trauma Integrated Care Pathway, tailoring support around each patient's specialist needs.
• Promote a truly patient-focused approach, working closely with multidisciplinary teams across the surgical division.
• Educate patients and carers, helping them understand their treatment options and supporting them to make healthy, informed choices.
• Maintain a safe and effective clinical environment, upholding the highest standards of patient care.
• Ensure clear, compassionate communication with patients, families and colleagues.
• Protect patient confidentiality at all times.
• Support, supervise and mentor junior staff, encouraging reflective practice and professional development.
• Provide hands-on clinical support as required to deliver high-quality care.
• Raise and escalate any patient safety concerns appropriately and promptly.
• Enter and manage data on the National Hip Fracture Database, developing action plans based on national findings.
• Help prevent complaints through proactive, sensitive communication with patients and relatives.
• Maintain health, safety and wellbeing for patients, families and colleagues.
