Job summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for afull-time Locum Consultant Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in Breast Surgery to join our dedicated and forward-thinking breast unit at the Royal United Hospital Bath.

This is a specialist post focused solely on the delivery of high-quality breast surgery services, with no general surgery commitment. You will join a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, playing a central role in the care of patients across their diagnostic and surgical journey.

As a Consultant Breast Surgeon, your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing expert clinical input within the symptomatic breast clinic, assessing and managing new and follow-up patients
  • Working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care
  • Leading and supporting the surgical phase of treatment for patients with breast cancer
  • Contributing to the smooth running of clinical areas and undertaking the associated administrative duties required to deliver an efficient service

The post will be based entirely at the RUH Breast Unit, offering a focused and well-supported environment for specialist practice.

Main duties of the job

The locum will work exclusively within the Breast Unit, with no general surgery commitment. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care throughout the diagnostic and surgical pathways for patients with breast symptoms and breast cancer.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively within a well-established multidisciplinary team to provide safe and effective care.
  • Contributing to the symptomatic breast clinic, managing both new and follow-up patients.
  • Participating in the surgical phase of treatment for patients with breast cancer, ensuring timely and high-quality care.
  • Supporting the delivery and smooth running of breast clinics and associated services.

The role is based entirely at the Royal United Hospital, within a supportive and highly regarded breast service.

Administrative Duties

Consultants are expected to undertake the administrative responsibilities associated with patient care and the efficient operation of their clinical areas. This includes maintaining accurate documentation, timely communication and contributing to service governance where required.

  • Completed subspecialist training In Breast Surgery

Experience

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in relevant speciality.
  • Ability to provide expert opinion in the diagnostic symptomatic breast clinic, to be able to counsel patients appropriately with regards to their treatment options, to able to perform to a high standard relevant surgical procedures expected of a breast surgeon (ie...lumpectomy, wide local excision, wire guided wide local excision, mastectomy, sentinel node biopsy and axillary node dissection).

  • To be able to appropriately assess, plan and counsel patients for complex oncoplastic breast surgery and reconstructive breast surgery.
