Job summary

Are you a ED Registrar/middle grade or specialty doctor looking to work in an energetic, friendly and welcoming emergency department (ED) in one of the most beautiful cities in the UK? Do you want to become an emergency medicine consultant?

Are you able to work at RCEM Tier 4 level in adult and paediatric emergency medicine? (see Tiers2-February-2025.pdf)

We are offering full or partial CESR programme tailored to your needs and we strongly encourage you to contact us in advance to discuss your individual requirements. We can offer contracts of 1 to 3 years duration. We already have an established CESR programme and have secured placements in anaesthetics, intensive care, paediatrics and acute medicine.

90% of your post is clinical:

You will self-roster your shifts on an annualised full shift rota giving you freedom to arrange the rota around your needs.

10% of your post is non clinical: Giving you time to maintain your portfolio and get experience in management, audit, teaching and research to help you complete your CESR competencies. You will also be given 10 days of study leave and a generous study budget on top of this to explore your educational needs.

Guaranteed Secondments

We guarantee a secondment per year as long as you are meeting your portfolio requirements, are up-to-date with mandatory training and appraisal and it is an agreed educational need.

Main duties of the job

Working in the ED with direct shop floor supervision from our 20 consultants, 1 consultant nurse, alongside 9 experienced ED middle grades, 3 Advanced Nurse Practitioners and 30 SHOs.

The post offers protected weekly departmental teaching and benefits from educational supervision by a consultant as well as many other educational opportunities on shift. A typical day may see you involved in Stroke Thrombolysis, PPCI for STEMI, Major Trauma (as a busy trauma unit) and Acute Paediatrics as well as Minor Injuries.

We use self rostering but need to provide cover at middle grade level 24/7. Overnight you will work alongside a second middle-grade to lead the department with the consultant on-call offsite.

You would be joining the senior ED team working on a full shift rota using self-rostering. A full-time equivalent full shift rota is a maximum of 42 hours per week with 1 in 3 weekend cover.

You will be supported by another 9 middle grade doctors (soon to be expanded due to recruitment) who also provide 24/7 cover as well as 30 SHOs and 3 RCEM credentialed Advanced Care Practitioners. There are 14 whole time equivalent consultants who cover the shop floor 8am-midnight weekdays and 8am - 10pm weekends providing supervision and training during your shifts
