Specimen Reception Manager

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a self-motivated and engaging HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to lead our Specimen Reception section.

The successful candidate will lead theSpecimen Reception section of Pathology and the staff that work within it as well providing technical oversight and support of C.difficile, norovirus, blood culture and respiratory virus testing in the laboratory.

The successful candidate will maintain the provision of an effective pre-analytical and support service to the technical disciplines within Blood Sciences and establish a functional interface between service users and the laboratory.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide line management support to all staff within the Specimen Reception section.
  • Organise and participate in the training and development of new staff within the sections.
  • Create and maintain policies and standard operating procedures that ensures the staff within the section can understand and carry out all relevant tasks efficiently.
  • Provide supervision to MLAs and ABPs daily to ensure smooth operational management of the section. Adjust daily staffing allocations to meet the needs of the laboratory, where necessary.
  • To produce and manage an effective MLA shift rota, and to ensure hours of service are covered, on weekdays as well as weekend and bank holiday support.
  • Develop and manage an effective inventory management system for the Pathology stores area. Engage with end users to effectively manage their supply of consumables.
  • Act as the main point of contact for general enquiries from primary care and local external healthcare providers. Ensure the timely resolution of issues relating to consumables distributed by the Pathology stores area, pre analytical handling of specimens and transport of specimens.
