Health Care Support Worker - Rheumatology

Job summary

We are looking for a friendly and compassionate person to come and join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out all aspects of clinical and administrative tasks within the Rheumatology department.

The role will involve working across the Biologics Day Unit and Rheumatology Outpatients department. This will include but not limited to performing vital signs, urinalysis, venepuncture and cannulation checking patients in and out and supporting the registered nurses with clinical tasks as required. Further training in performing venesections will be offered under supervision to the successful candidates.

We measure disease activity scores, training for this will be provided. Rheumatology runs two departments, and the successful candidate will be trained to work in both departments.

The Biologics Day Unit is a busy infusion suite delivering treatment to patients from a plethora of specialties ranging from Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, immunology. We are passionate about the development of staff to help them reach their potential, by providing a supportive environment for growth, we help staff to achieve this.

Rheumatology outpatient's department is a busy efficient outpatient department, where we need staff to be organised and ensure the smooth running of the patient's appointments. Good communication skills are vital.

The successful candidate will work between both Rheumatology Outpatients department and Biologics Day Unit.

Main duties of the job

  • Accurately record patient's vital signs, e.g. temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate. Recognise and report abnormalities, with the use of NEWS 2. Record height and weight onto patient's medical records.
  • Performance of advanced phlebotomy duties to include cannulation, venesection (training will be provided after completing cannulation and venepuncture competencies).
  • Demonstrate dexterity and coordination when undertaking treatment of patients where accuracy is important: e.g. venepuncture, urinalysis, venesection, blood glucose monitoring, ECG recording, Cardiac monitors.
  • Able to observe strict confidentiality towards all aspects of patient care
  • Ensuring compliance with the Code of Practice and Policies of the department regarding Health and Safety.
  • Support the service by working closely with pharmacy, ensuring patient medication arrives on time, to prevent delays in care.
  • Willing to undertake phlebotomy training and to undertake annualcompetencies.
  • Actively contribute to team work and willing to generate and participate in change projects within the department. Able to adapt to new demands, showing flexibility in line with the demands of the service
