Job summary

The post holder will be attached to one of the GI firms, Emergency Surgical Ambulatory Care and take part in the on call rota (currently a 1 in 11 with banding supplement accordingly). The successful applicant will be involved in service improvement and further development of our acute services.

The GI unit consists of one UGI and two LGI firms although there is much cross-cover across the whole unit. We offer surgery for benign upper GI disease and manage the full range of colorectal disease including cancer, IBD and pelvic floor problems.

We are at the forefront of the increasingly important ESAC service with four consultants who offer clinics and theatres for semi-urgent admissions including acute gall bladder disease.

General Surgery has 70 beds spread across 4 wards, including a dedicated acute admissions unit and short stay ward. The Main Theatres block contains eight theatres. The Speciality comprises of the following medical staff with their sub-speciality interest:

6 Consultants - Colorectal surgery

1 Consultant - Benign Gastro-oesophageal surgery

4 Consultants- Emergency Surgery (three UGI specialist interest and one colorectal)

1 Associate Specialist - Upper GI

In addition, the department has 10 Specialist Registrars, 2F2's, 1CT1, 2CT2, 2ST teaching fellows and QI fellow.

There is a busy emergency work load with an average of 30 admissions per day.

Main duties of the job

Your Personal Commitment to Training

Although this is not a recognised training post, there will be opportunities for learning and development. You will be expected to be responsible for your own learning by making full use of the tutorial system, access to academic staff and consultant's teaching and to attend as directed for training and in-service commitments..

You will be expected to prepare presentations as requested for tutorials and assist in any collection of information for audit procedures as and when these are carried out within the department. The department has a structured clinical governance and communication programme where practices are assessed, guidelines reviewed etc that ensures an ethos of continual quality and service improvement.

AUDIT

There are active audit programmes, and Junior Doctors are expected to carry out at least one audit annually and present their findings. The audit office is keen to offer support, particularly with design and data interpretation.

RESEARCH

The post holder will have the opportunity to engage in research activities, working closely with their consultant supervisors in the colorectal team. One half day per week (with exception of on call activities) will be reserved for this work.
