Job summary
The department of Breast Surgery are pleased to offer an exciting new post for a Physician Associate. This would be a new role within our team and will be joining a friendly, cohesive multidisciplinary group with a passion for patient care, team working and service development. The successful candidate will have an extensive training program in breast examination, ordering and interpreting relevant investigations. In addition, they will be taught about the breast cancer patient pathways and our ongoing survivorship program. There will also be training in family history risk and genetic tests.
When competencies have been fulfilled, the successful candidate will be working alongside consultants who would be responsible for them. There will be opportunities to work in theatre, assisting and progressing to wound closure and other simple operative tasks. You will be working within the policies and procedures of Royal United Hospital Bath.
It is expected that the Physician Associate will become involved in the activities of the department and it would be envisaged that the role would be developed flexibly over time in accordance with the appointee's interests and the department's objectives.
It is expected that the Physician Associate would undertake further training to achieve prescribing qualifications.
Main duties of the job
Two week triage & 2ww clinic
Aid current staff accurately triaging GP referrals.
Trained to use clinical reasoning skills & techniques to examine, assess, diagnose, plan &present a range of treatment options.
Implement, evaluate & amend the treatment plan by providing timely information to enable the patient to make informed choices about their treatment. This will include patients with diverse or complex needs. This will result in the safe management & appropriate referral/discharge of patients with undifferentiated undiagnosed & complex presentations related to breast disease.
Potential to undertake peripheral breast pain clinics in community.
Responsible for working within the Breast Care team providing expert, evidence based healthcare to meet the holistic needs of patients with, or fear they have, breast cancer, from diagnosis through their care & treatment pathways.
Involvement in genetic testing pathways.
Maintain clear, accurate & concise patient records in accordance with Trust policy & professional standards, including the use of Electronic Patient Records System.
Data collection & analysis.
Working collaboratively with junior doctors to coordinate occasional elective & emergency inpatients.
Taking bloods
Simple minor operations in clinic
Clinical core biopsies
Theatre assistance, training to suture & simple operative tasks
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation including defibrillation
