Job summary

We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist Specialist to join our Point of Care Testing (POCT) team on a 12 month fixed term contract.

POCT is the performance of diagnostic laboratory tests undertaken by non-laboratory personnel in a near patient setting. The post holder will be responsible for the service delivery of a comprehensive POCT support function both at the RUH and within the community in partnership with clinical POCT system users and POCT management team to ensure all POCT systems perform safely, effectively and efficiently in accordance with all relevant policies and professional and regulatory standards.

The post holder will be responsible for implementation of policies, procedures and guidance relating to POCT services across the RUH and within the community.

Main duties of the job

  • To be a key contact for POCT users; providing support and specialist advice to ensure service are and remain safe and effective.
  • Maintain a record of all POCT equipment; location; lead contact and trained users for the locality
  • Provide users of POC test equipment with technical, operational / maintenance support and advice.
  • Troubleshoot, repair or organise replacement of POCT equipment
  • To advise & ensure POCT equipment, reagents & consumables are stored & used in line with manufacturer's recommendations and RUH POCT policies & SOPs.
  • To plan and deliver local training and competency assessment for clinical and laboratory staff in use and care of POCT systems and IT
  • To monitor POCT consumables and reagent usage in relation to activity and storage where appropriate
  • To order reagent & consumable stocks in collaboration worth POCT leads on other sites to minimise deliveries and waste.
  • Organise, distribute and monitor internal quality control / external quality assurance programmes
  • To oversee local IQC & EQA for all POCT systems; supporting users in identifying, investigating and reporting errors and sharing findings with wider POCT Team.
  • To monitor user performance & re-training intervals; supporting local trainers and working in partnership with users; suppliers & the wider POCT Team
