Job summary

This Associate Practitioner (ABP) role rotates through the sections of Specimen Reception, Immunology and Point of Care Testing (POCT).

MLAs are responsible for carrying out all laboratory support tasks that do not require BMS HCPC Registration, including some technical tasks. Principally these tasks are associated with sample receipt and all pre- and post- analytical preparation, basic supervised technical work, and the organisation of supplies and consumables. A large proportion of the time will be spent on entering patient details into the laboratory computer system. A high degree of concentration is required as errors at this stage may not be corrected before results are released to the requesting clinician.

In addition to MLA Band 2 & Band 3 roles the Band 4 ABPs will work as part of a team responsible for the delivery of a quality laboratory and clinical Pathology service by providing skilled assistance to Biomedical Scientist/ Consultant/ Nursing staff. They will perform a number of Healthcare scientific activities including undertaking standard biomedical investigations (tests) and non-routine tests on a range of body fluids and tissues

Main duties of the job

  1. Supporting the Reception Manager to ensure that the department runs smoothly and that the flow of samples from reception to the blood science departments is optimised which may require intervention and auditing
  2. Oversee and provide support to the band 3 senior staff ensuring that the band 3 staff are able to perform their duties
  3. Responsible for competency assessment and record keeping for all reception staff supported by the Reception Manager.
  4. Be able to perform the Band 2 and Band 3 role's within Reception that include but not limited to sorting, requesting, labelling, centrifugation, maintenance and cleaning to ensure that the daily workload is completed within the appropriate time frame.
  5. Supporting the processing of faeces samples and throat swabs through the Cepheid analyser which may require greater support through outbreak periods specifically the winter period.
  6. Support the processing of blood samples through analytical processes in Immunology.
  7. Training will be provided to perform manual, semi automated and automated analytical techniques as applicable, meeting turnaround times with prompt reporting of results used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  8. Analyse IQC and EQA samples on ward based urine dipstick meters.
