Job summary

The Trust is looking to recruit two substantive whole time (10 PAs) Consultants in Adult Neurology, however less than full time applicants will also be considered.

This is a really exciting opportunity to be part of an expanding dynamic and enthusiastic Neurology team at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. You will be part of a friendly and dedicated team already consisting of four Consultants who have a wealth of experience across a multitude of special interests, as well as one IMT, one StR and one F1. In addition, the department has a Medical Nurse Practitioner as well as specialist nurses supporting Parkinson's disease, MS, MND and Epilepsy. Applicants who have a special interest will be considered, especially one, which complements our existing service.

The RUH Neurology service is exceptional in running a district general hospital inpatient Neurology service; our ward, Helena, is a designated 17-bedded Neurology Unit, providing inpatient acute care and rehabilitation. The ward is highly regarded with a well-embedded multidisciplinary approach for patients with acute neurological disease. The unit also receives patients for acute rehabilitation transferred from the regional Neurosciences Centre in Bristol.

There are facilities for day case lumbar punctures and intravenous infusions, outpatient suites, neurophysiology and administrative offices. MRI, CT scanning, EEG and nerve conduction studies are all available on site.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties: The holder of this post will be a Consultant Adult Neurologist with a special interest which compliments the existing consultant interests.

There will be a commitment to providing elective and urgent out patient activity at the RUH and in Wiltshire community settings (4 clinics per week which may include 'hot' Neurology clinics to support early discharge, as well as advice & guidance to Primary Care through the Cinapsis system), with 2 sessions per week to provide inpatient consultation and direct inpatient care on a 3 monthly rota.

The post will be based at the RUH and the holder will participate in audit, clinical governance and directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Lead Clinician of Neurology.

A commitment to maintain professional expertise by attendance at meetings and courses is expected, and completion of diaries for CME is essential.

The post holder will be expected to cover for colleagues when absent or on leave.

The RUH hosts teaching of medical students from Bristol University, the Bath Academy, and all Neurology consultants are encouraged to contribute to teaching of these medical students in formal sessions as well as in clinical settings.

Management Duties: The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with Consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
