Job summary

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon with suitable training and subspecialty interest in Paediatric plastics surgery for a fixed term of 12 months at Sheffield Children's Hospital and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

This is a 8 PA consultant vacancy, covering general paediatric plastic surgery that includes 1:18 on-call service.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will provide clinic and theatre activity to facilitate both the elective and acute paediatric plastic surgery services. Currently approximately 1.5 theatre list and two out-patient clinics per week serve the elective referral base. The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

The allocation of time between the various duties of the post will be open to some adjustment in consultation with consultant colleagues and the employing Trust. An annual review of duties will take place with the Clinical Lead as part of the Job Plan process.

The appointee will be expected to take an active part in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching and training and in this respect, as long as you remain a Consultant within the Trust, you will be regarded as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the University of Sheffield, subject to the regulations of the University.

About us

Plastic Surgery Services are split across 3 sites - the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (a largely non-acute hospital incorporating most of the elective Plastic Surgery Services including Skin, Breast, Head and Neck and Sarcoma), the Northern General Hospital (the acute hospital including Adult Accident and Emergency Services, Adult Burns Services, Acute Plastic Surgery Trauma and elective Hand Surgery Services) and the Sheffield Children's Hospital. Plastic Surgery Services at the Children's Hospital are provided on a daily basis by 2 full time consultants supported by a small group of the Plastic Surgery Consultant Body individually undertaking a number of fixed sessions at the Children's Hospital.

  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise.
  • Name on the specialist register for Plastic Surgery or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview.

Desirable

  • MD or PhD or equivalent

Experience

  • Broad experience in the generality of Plastic Surgery, both adult and paediatric, with a particular emphasis on the surgical management of hand conditions including congenital upper limb anomalies.
  • Needs to have current Safeguarding Child/Adult, Paediatric Burns experience/competencies
  • Good knowledge of modern surgical techniques and competence in microsurgical techniques
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
