Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, inspirational individual to take up the temporary 1 year post of Ward Manager on NSU within Surgery and Critical Care with the Lead role of NSU clinical governance, to manage NSU's clinical incidents, datix and risks.

The applicant must be an enthusiastic and motivated Nurse who is Qualified in Neonatal nursing care and has extensive experience in neonatal surgery and shift coordination at band 6 level. As NSU ward manager, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate collaborative leadership skills and support innovative working with NSU nursing colleagues, surgical teams, neonatologists, operational mangers and the Neonatal and Surgery in Children Operational Delivery Networks .

You must have current NMC registration and registered Children's Nurse Qualification and be able to demonstrate:

  • Strong communication skills with ability to negotiate

Main duties of the job

  • To manage the Ward in a variety of settings, ensuring the quality of care provision to children, using unit protocols and Trust policies and guidelines.
  • To monitor workload and workforce resources on a day to day basis.
  • To be responsible for, and to carry out the assessment, planning and implementation of programmes of care providing support, guidance and leadership for junior members of staff in their care delivery.
  • To be responsible for the professional development of a team of staff identifying objectives to ensure individual action plans are met.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will have responsibility of:

  • Managing NSU datix and the investigation of clinical incidents.
  • Providing clinical supervision and holding supportive, learning discussions with colleagues.
  • Initiating the STAR tool for medication incidents
  • Sharing learning from incidents
  • Providing feedback to datix reporters with outcomes of datix incidents
  • Improving datix reporting in NSU by understanding the barriers and implementing change
  • Promoting psychological safety and a safety culture within NSU
  • To promote Duty of Candour
  • Managing NSU risks and actions.
  • Attending S&CC clinical quality group on the 2nd Thursday of the month
  • Attend Patient safety Panel on Wednesday morning if deemed appropriate.
  • Attend the monthly NSU Team meetings to feedback clinical governance and facilitate MDT learning and collaboration.
  • To work with Y&H NODN in neonatal patient safety and quality projects
  • To support NSU education team with sharing learning from clinical governance
  • To support quality improvement projects on NSU
  • Support the development of clinical guidelines and SOPs
  • To support the NSU ward manager, PCCU and NSU Lead Nurse and the NSU B7 team to improve patient safety and quality of care.
  • Demonstrate collaborative and compassionate leadership
  • To support the Trust with Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF)
