An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
The department comprises of Acute Biochemistry, Metabolic Biochemistry (Inborn Errors), Tissue Culture and Newborn Screening. The post provides a unique opportunity to gain experience of these specialist areas alongside routine Biochemistry. Based primarily within the Newborn Screening Laboratory the post holder will also participate in Duty Biochemist rota on average 1 day per week and reporting of metabolic tests, and contribute to the quality management requirements within the department. Support will be given for your continued development, including those wishing to undertake FRCPath examinations and the department is accredited to provide HSST training.

We have excellent links with local clinicians, working closely with a number of different clinical teams, and as part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network we work alongside colleagues across the region to provide high quality laboratory services for patients of all ages.
Ideally the post is suitable for a HCPC registered Clinical Scientist, however we would welcome applicantions from candidates in the final year of STP training with a view to employing in Spring/Summer 2024.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
- Maintain and develop the quality and nature of the service provided by the Regional Newborn Screening Laboratory under the direction of the Lead Clinical Scientist.
- Provide information and interpretation of Newborn Screening results to clinical colleagues both within the Trust and the Region and to other Regional Laboratory Services
- Maintain and develop various databases within the Newborn Screening Laboratory.
- Participate in the Duty Biochemist rota.
- Additionally participate in providing a high quality and timely general clinical chemistry service and a tertiary referral service for the diagnosis of inherited metabolic disorders through the provision of clinical advice, interpretation of analytical results, liaison with medics and other laboratory services.

The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB.
