Job summary

The Department of Histopathology is committed to delivering an efficient, high quality diagnostic service. It is a busy, friendly department with an excellent reputation providing specialist services.

We are looking for someone to join the team as the Laboratory Services Manager.

The post-holder will be responsible, in liaison with senior colleagues, for the supervision, organisation, and strategic development of the department. This will encompass all aspects of managerial functions such as staffing, quality, premises, finance, IT, technical equipment, and other assets.

Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Under the Head of Department, be responsible for the supervision, organisation and strategic development of Histopathology. This will encompass all aspects of managerial functions, staffing, quality, premises, finance, IT, technical equipment and other assets.
  • Ensure appropriate health and safety and quality standards are maintained in line with the Trust health and safety policy, that the departmental achieve and maintain appropriate accreditation (UKAS, HTA, MHRA) and the Pathology Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Ensure appropriate standards of education and training are maintained as well as a system of Continual Professional Development (CPD) in line with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)
  • Work with the Heads of Department on all aspects of business and financial planning commensurate with the development needs of the department and the demands made of it.
  • To represent the departments at Divisional meetings and to work with the Clinical / Associate Director of PD&G.

  • Responsible for ensuring safe use of expensive, highly complex laboratory equipment and IT systems, stock control and management of laboratory budget.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of all technical, clerical and support staff including supervision, training and providing specialist technical advice. Day to day interaction with Histopathology Consultants who are line managed by the Head of Histopathology.
  • Involved in the selection and recruitment of staff, audit and R&D.
