Job summary

Applications are invited for thefollowing Paediatric Orthopaedic Fellowshipsat Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust with the following start and end dates inclusive.

Applicants need to specify which of the roles they would like to be considered for and rank them in order:

  1. Paediatric Orthopaedics and Trauma Fellowship - Commencing April 3rd , 2024 - April 1st ,2025 : Six monthly rotation with 2 consultants each posting
  2. Paediatric Orthopaedics and Limb Reconstruction Fellowship - Commencing October 2nd, 2024 - September 30th 2025 - 12 months with 2 limb reconstruction consultants
  3. Paediatric Orthopaedics and Young Adult Hip Fellowship- Commencing October 2nd, 2024 - September 30th, 2025 - 12 month position with young hip preservation consultants- Adult and children at two sites
  4. Paediatric Orthopaedics and Trauma Fellowship - Commencing October 2nd, 2024 - September 30th, 2025 : Six monthly rotation with 2 consultants each posting
  5. Paediatric Orthopaedics and trauma Fellowship - Commencing April 2nd, 2025 - April 1st,2026 : Six monthly rotation with 2 consultants each posting

Main duties of the job

Experience can be gained in a wide range of Paediatric Orthopaedics with the exception of malignant bone tumours. You will receive training in the management of Paediatric Orthopedic conditions in general and the department prides itself in well-developed sub specialties in all areas. The department has well established ultrasound screening in DDH, the Ponseti management of clubfeet, the treatment of neuromuscular disorders with gait analysis , limb reconstruction, skeletal dysplasia, young adult hip preservation and soft tissue knee reconstructive surgery.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Experience can be gained in a wide range of Paediatric Orthopaedics with the exception of malignant bone tumours. You will receive training in the management of Paediatric Orthopedic conditions in general and the department prides itself in well-developed sub specialties in all areas. The department has well established ultrasound screening in DDH, the Ponseti management of clubfeet, the treatment of neuromuscular disorders with gait analysis , limb reconstruction, skeletal dysplasia, young adult hip preservation and soft tissue knee reconstructive surgery.

There is a well-established hub and spoke service with our regional general hospitals and is well known for tertiary referrals from UK and abroad. There are specialised MDT clinics those of Spasticity and neuromuscular, Spina bifida, Sports injuries, Metabolic bone disease (OI), Achondroplasia, Skeletal Dysplasias , Upper limb and limb deficiency managed with appropriate medical and surgical disciplines with input from allied health professionals.

There is also training in deformity planning and limb reconstruction of various disorders, with exposure to circular and monolateral frames, as well as internal fixation techniques. There will be involvement in the acute and late phased management of complex fractures, and it is expected that the post holder will gain considerable hands on operative experience in trauma and elective conditions. Those that are keen on spinal surgery may be given opportunities as the department has a well-established and renowned Paediatric spinal unit.

The post is whole time with 40 standard hours per week with a 1 in 10 on-call rota with prospective cover.

Audit and research is actively encouraged and there is opportunity and time for involvement in these activities.

It is expected that applicants will demonstrate a desire to continue their practice in the Paediatric Orthopaedic and spinal sub-specialties and the application and CV should reflect an interest in this subspecialty.

Candidates should have the ability to communicate fluently in English for example to have passed the IELTS English proficiency examination or equivalent and should be registered with the General Medical Council or eligible for sponsorship and registration. Applications are welcomed from EC and non EC candidates and trainees from the armed forces.

An IELTS total score of 7.5 minimum is needed with each subsection having a score of 7.0 to 9.0 such that your average is a total of 7.5 or above, to qualify for GMC registration and to apply for this fellowship. Any subsection score less than 7.0 is considered a failure and also a total score of less than 7.5, also is a failure. You will be asked to send in your scores at the time of application.
