Job responsibilities

To plan, implement and evaluate care for children with Gastroenterology conditions

• Ensure all children from all age groups and abilities have optimum family-centred, evidence based care.
• Ensure parents and children have the opportunity to discuss current treatment options and given the opportunity to make an informed decision.
• Carry out nursing observations and monitor and record as appropriate using technical equipment as necessary for which training and supervision has been given.
• Provide parents and children with specific written and verbal information, advice and supplies as appropriate to individual care.
• Communicate plans of care, changes in condition and treatment to parents/carers and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
• Manage complex clinical situations responding to the changing needs of the patient.
• Administer medication according to the Code of Professional Conduct and local policy including oral, subcutaneous, intravenous and topical treatments.
• Monitor patients on immune-suppression and escalate as appropriate to senior members of the Gastroenterology team.
• Provide a telephone advice line to patients with Gastroenterology conditions.
• Liaise with patients and their families via the bleep, email and telephone.
• Maintain patient databases
• Complete audit and research
• Maintain professional accountability and responsibility by revalidating (3 years) and renewing registration on an annual basis

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential

• RSCN or RN (Child)
• Mentorship qualification

Desirable

• Paediatric Life Support Certificate

Experience

Essential

• 2 years band 6 experience
• Experience of caring for children and families with gastroenterology conditions

Desirable

• Medical and/or Surgical Nursing experience
