Specialist Midwife for Perinatal Pelvic Health (Band 7)

Job summary

The Perinatal Pelvic Health Midwife work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to enhance prevention of pelvic health injury in pregnancy and birth including supporting the delivery of the OASI bundle, identifying women at risk of pelvic floor injury and providing training and education for staff and service users around pelvic floor exercises. After suitable training, to offer assessment and evidenced based intervention for urinary incontinence during pregnancy and after birth.

The Specialist Midwife will work cooperatively with existing services and the Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapist to develop pathways, referral criteria, data collection and service evaluation related to the implementation of a new service. To implement and provide specialist evidence-based care for women with Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury (OASI), other Childbirth Related Perineal Trauma (CRPT) and pregnancy related bladder/bowel dysfunction including investigations and counselling of results.

The post holder will act as a lead resource for maternity services with expert knowledge of perinatal pelvic health and to provide clinical advice, support and training to staff, mothers and babies and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. To lead in the development and promotion of Trust guidelines and protocols for women requiring perineal suturing and bladder care, OASI and pelvic floor exercises, adopting a multi professional approach.

Part Time - 15 hours per week

Main duties of the job

Work closely with the Muti-disciplinary team to fulfil the trust's requirements of the evolving perinatal pelvic health pathway.

To be responsible for providing consultation, advice, referral and treatment (within scope) for women with mild/moderate pelvic floor dysfunction as part of the perinatal pelvic health pathway

To use the current evidence base to support women to make fully informed decision around mode of birth fully informed decision around mode of birth

To be competent and confident in all areas of midwifery practice and act as an expert specialist resource in perinatal pelvic health, offering highly specialist advice to other midwives and medical staff.

Promote evidence based practice

Be a visible leader who is accessible to patients, visitors and staff, providing professional and clinical leadership adhering and promoting the Trust personal responsibility framework.

Participate in the development and implementation of maternity services clinical guidance.

Ensure that midwifery and maternity guidelines and protocols are implemented and updated in accordance with Trust policies, NMC standards and national guidelines and frameworks.

Support staff in enhancing their skills in reducing risk within clinical practice.

Take a lead role in supporting the development of a safety culture within the context of resource constraints and multiple conflicting priorities.
