Job responsibilities

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL

To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care.

To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complicated presentations and multiple pathologies. To use appropriate clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition.

Formulate and deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills (including manual physiotherapy techniques, patient education, exercise classes, electrotherapy techniques and other alternative options).

To take delegated responsibility from more senior staff for managing certain patients and be responsible for providing physiotherapy assessment and treatment plans for these patients.

Assess the understanding of patients regarding treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.

Use appropriate verbal and non-verbal tools to communicate effectively with patients, to progress treatment programmes. This includes patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating (dysphasia, depression, deafness, and blindness are included, as are patients who are unable to accept diagnosis).

Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required.

To manage clinical risk within own patient case load.

To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with CSP standards.

To represent physiotherapy and/or individual patients at the multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated service and the integration of physiotherapy treatment, including discussion of patient care, progress, and discharge planning.

To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all electrotherapy equipment, gymnasium equipment, hydrotherapy and patient appliances and aids by patients.

PROFESSIONAL

To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities, and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.

Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence-based practice in the areas of each rotation.

Participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with agreed personal development programmes to meet set knowledge and competencies.

Undertake the measurement and evaluation of work and current practices through the use of evidence based projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with more senior physiotherapists.

Be an active member of the in-service training programme by attendance at and participation in in-service training programmes, tutorials, individual training sessions, external courses and peer review.

To undertake as directed the collection of data for use in service audit projects.

ORGANISATIONAL

Ensure that your own practice and that of staff under your supervision meet the required professional standards of physiotherapy practice.

To maintain accurate and up to date clinical and statistical records in accordance with CSP guidelines.

To observe the health and safety policy of the physiotherapy department, to ensure that the policy is observed by all staff and students for whom you are responsible, and to report all accidents, hazards, untoward incidents and potential accidents immediately to line manager.

To participate in the Quality Assurance Programme of the Physiotherapy Service and where appropriate co-operate with clinical audit programmes within the clinical area.

To arrange working hours, annual and study leave with line manager.

To observe and work in accordance with manual handling regulations whilst lifting/manoeuvring and treating patients, equipment and/or heavy goods.

Qualifications

Essential

• BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy or diploma with HCPC registration
• UK Registrations with the Health Care Professions Council

Desirable

• Post graduate courses relevant to MSK Physiotherapy
• Member of relevant Professional special interest groups/organisations

Experience

Essential

• Recent and relevant undergraduate experience working in a variety of clinical areas and settings
• Undergraduate experience of multidisciplinary team working and working collaboratively with other professions and agencies

Desirable

• Recent post graduate experience with relevance to the job within the NHS
• Experience of service development/ audit
• Experience of service development
• Experience in use of IT applications

Skills

Essential

• Use of Physiotherapy assessment and treatment skills

• Knowledge of standardised and non-standardised assessments and treatments relevant to MSK Physiotherapy
