Education Fellow in Emergency Medicine - FY3/CT1 Equivalent
This is a 12 month position.
From August 2026 there is an exciting opportunity to support the teaching of our undergraduate medical students within the Emergency Department. Post holders will also be funded to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education.
This post is 80% clinical & 20% educational. One day per week will be spent teaching or studying and the rest of the time will be spent working on a rolling, full time rota providing 24 hr care at FY3/CT1 level as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
The postholder will work alongside the Undergraduate Tutors to teach and support Medical Students during their clinical placement at HDFT. For the most part this will be students in their 4th year. The teaching days will be rostered well in advance, generally on the same day of the week. In between student placements post holders can utilise their education time to prepare, plan and learn for local teaching & study for their PGCert.
Senior staff are in the department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with consultant direct support and supervision on each of the 7 days. There is a trauma team for major trauma. "Shop floor" teaching and support is an active component of the daily work of the middle grade and senior staff.
There is opportunity for audit and quality improvement activity. There is a weekly teaching programme for junior medical staff. In addition, there is digital access to extensive medical resources.
Main duties of the job
To provide teaching to undergraduate students one day per week
Study for PGCert
To undertake the initial assessment, diagnosis and management of patients in the Emergency Department (ED
To facilitate safe discharge or onward referral of these patients from the ED
Liaison with other specialties and agencies including Primary Care within this process
Requesting diagnostic tests (such as X-Ray and laboratory investigations) and taking biological samples, manually and through the Trust's computerised system
To provide advice and support to other junior staff and nursing staff within the department
Act in accordance with the policies of the ED and seek advice and assistance from more senior medical and nursing staff where appropriate
