Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Qualified Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology and Blood Transfusion team at Harrogate District Hospital as Advanced Biomedical Scientist in Blood Transfusion.

The team at Harrogate is small and friendly requiring a high degree of team work and co-operation from its members so candidates should be prepared to be part of the close knit environment fostered in the department.

The post is for 37.5 hours per week and would suit anyone who holds at least one of the following qualifications:

IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in blood transfusion, transfusion science or Haematology

MSc or FIBMS in a science discipline

Main duties of the job

The Haematology Department has two Sysmex XN-1000 full blood count analysers and two ACL Topp 550 coagulation analysers. Blood transfusion has two Grifols Blood Grouping analyser.

Following successful UKAS assessments all sections of Pathology are compliant with ISO15189 standards and fully accredited. The department has excellent IT systems with ICE requesting & reporting, Clinisys Winpath LIMS, and Q Pulse quality management system.

  • To have responsibility for the management and performance of the Transfusion laboratory to provide the specialized Transfusion service for the Trust.
  • This is an advanced role and the post-holder will act as lead scientist in Blood Transfusion and be part of both the Hospital Transfusion Team (HTT) & the Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC).
  • This post includes line management of scientific and technical staff, quality assurance and training of staff.
