Job summary

HDFT are seeking to appoint an experienced Physiotherapist to our ground breaking, and award-winning service incorporating exercise into the treatment pathways of all cancer patients at Active Against Cancer. This is a rare, and much sought after opportunity to contribute to the delivery of this novel Exercise and Health Referral service for patients living with and beyond cancer. There is an expanding body of evidence in support of the benefits of exercise and increased physical activity in the adult population at every stage of the cancer journey. We are now seeking to appoint an Experienced Physiotherapist to work as an autonomous practitioner and as a valued member of the service which is at the leading edge of healthcare provision in cancer care in the community.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as an autonomous practitioner to provide advanced physiotherapeutic assessment, diagnosis, treatment and advice to patients who may have diverse and complex presentations.

The post holder, along with our Lead Physical Trainer will be responsible for assessing patients at the point of diagnosis and referral into the Active Against Cancer programme. The post holder will undertake advanced assessment and treatment, providing physiotherapy input and support and coordination of safe exercise prescription.

The post holder will also review patients throughout the programme to ensure patients are safe and supported and can be physically optimised prior to and following cancer treatment.

The post holder will also be required to sign-post patients to approved local educational programmes and support groups to ensure patients can continue to live well with and beyond cancer.

The post holder may also assist in the delivery of group-based exercise sessions with the aim of improving the overall experience for the population and, ultimately, health outcomes.

The post holder will also be responsible for the supervision and teaching of physiotherapy students.

About us

Since July 2019 the Active Against Cancer team have established and run a groundbreaking, and award-winning service incorporating exercise into the treatment pathways of all cancer patients within Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. The service offers one-to-one assessments at the time of diagnosis, during which patients are prescribed a personalised prehabilitation exercise programme, delivered by physiotherapists and specialist trainers. Programmes include a variety of activities including circuit classes, Pilates, balance, walking and online classes. Patients are followed-up regularly and continue on programmes throughout treatment and up to 6 months post-treatment. The service is run from a picturesque base at Harrogate Sports and Fitness Centre (HSFC), where peer support and social interaction between patients is actively encouraged!
