Job summary

The Maxillo-facial and Orthodontic Outpatient Department is a specialised area which delivers a wide range of services to patients across many specialities.

These range from:

  • Diagnosis and surgical treatment of Head and Neck Skin cancers
  • Extra and Intra Oral complications, including Mouth cancers and facial deformities.
  • Local anaesthetic surgical lists for the intervention and treatment of complicated or medically indicated tooth extractions
  • Diagnosis and treatment of numerous Intra Oral mouth conditions.
  • Assessment and treatment of Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.
  • Assessment and planning of Orthognathic surgery.

Main duties of the job

  • To receive patients and prepare them for examinations and procedures. Assist the clinician with procedures.
  • Act as patient advocate, check patients understanding and reinforce advice given. Supervise the patient until fit to leave the department.
  • Be able to competently carry out Nurse Led Oral Health education clinics.
  • Support the patients following surgical procedures and ensure their safety at all times.
  • To work autonomously during clinical/treatment sessions using Department protocols and policies.
  • Chairside assist Orthodontists and speciality doctors during treatment sessions.
  • Provide a high quality service to patients at all times, keeping up to date with clinical practise.
  • Is computer literate, to be able to make appointments and remain updated with mandatory training and CPD.
  • To provide Holiday and sickness cover as required.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To provide general advice and guidance to patient and carers.
  • Communicate to a wide age group from small children to the elderly, whilst being aware of barriers of communication such as language, hearing impairment, learning difficulties etc. Maintain effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • GDC registered and evidence of CPD
  • Able to work as part of a team under own initiative
  • Promotes good standard of Health and safety in working practice using judgement and analytical skills to identify risks and seek solutions.
  • Support the Oral Health team in the delivery of advice /instructions using specialised skills.
  • Provide chair side support to the clinician during assessment and treatment of patients. Providing specific post-operative advice/instructions.
  • Act as a chaperone at all times during a patient assessment and treatment.
  • Follows policies and guidelines in order to facilitate best practice.
  • Ensures clinical areas comply with health and safety, waste, COSHH, Infection control, Medical devices and Decontamination policies.
  • Assist with ordering and stock rotation.
  • Undertakes daily testing and maintenance checks on equipment to ensure they are fit for purpose.
  • Responsible for keeping accurate and legible records using computerised / written systems.
  • Participates in audits and surveys as necessary to own work.
  • The post holder is required to demonstrate ongoing, continuous professional development and should not work outside their defined level of competence.
  • The post holder is required to participate in the trusts performance review process and work towards meeting identified development needs /objectives.
  • Post holder must carry out their responsibilities in regard to all Trust policy and Protocols.
  • To be familiar with comply with all Infection control policies in order to reduce the spread of healthcare associated infections.
  • Comply with the relevant Governance standards applicable to the trust and maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data protection act of 1998.
