Job summary
The Advanced Specialist Practitioner in Glaucoma will play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality glaucoma care within the Ophthalmology Department at York Hospital. Working one day per week, the post-holder will provide expert clinical assessment and management within face-to-face glaucoma clinics, contributing to safe, timely, and patient-centred care.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the post offers the opportunity to be involved in glaucoma research activity, working alongside York's award-winning Glaucoma Team. The role will support ongoing service development, evidence-based practice, and innovation in glaucoma management, helping to shape future models of care across the department.
The successful candidate will be required to work on Mondays.
Main duties of the job
- Work autonomously as an Advanced Specialist Practitioner, managing a glaucoma caseload within ophthalmology services.
- Deliver high-quality, patient-centred care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary glaucoma team at York Hospital.
- Assess, diagnose, treat and educate patients using advanced clinical skills and specialist glaucoma knowledge.
- Perform and interpret investigations including visual fields, OCT, tonometry, pachymetry and gonioscopy.
- Co-manage complex and unstable glaucoma cases alongside Consultant Ophthalmologists.
- Maintain full professional accountability for clinical decisions and patient management.
- Ensure accurate, contemporaneous clinical records in line with legal, national and Trust standards.
- Comply with data protection, confidentiality policies and relevant legislation.
- Communicate effectively with Consultants and the wider ophthalmology team, providing detailed clinical information.Support service development by teaching and mentoring less experienced staff, promoting shared learning.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists, Nurses and technicians.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development in line with GOC requirements.
- Undertake additional duties as required to meet service needs.
