Job summary
We are seeking a highly skilled, adaptable, and motivated Healthcare Support Worker who is passionate about delivering exceptional care within this specialist area.
Ward 39 is York Hospital's designated Fractured Neck of Femur (NOF) ward, providing highly specialised care to some of the Trust's most vulnerable patients. In 2025, over 460 fractured NOF patients were admitted to the Trust, and Ward 39 plays a pivotal role in delivering safe, compassionate, evidence-based care to this complex group of patients.
Fractured NOF patients are typically frail, elderly, and often present with cognitive impairment, including dementia and delirium. Many require significant emotional support, enhanced communication skills, and personalised, dignified care.
This role will suit someone who:o Has a keen interest or experience in dementia, Alzheimer's disease, cognitive impairment, or frailty nursing,o Thrives in a fast paced, specialist clinical environment,o Wants to develop expertise in the care of vulnerable older adults,o Is committed to providing high quality, person centred care every day.
A 3-week Healthcare Academy training programme will be delivered as part of your induction. Alongside this training our Clinical Educator team in Surgery offer a comprehensive induction and you will be supported through a probationary period which is tailored to your needs, and that supports your individual requirements.
Main duties of the job
As a Healthcare Support Worker on Ward 39, you will play a vital part in supporting patients throughout their entire hospital journey. Your responsibilities will include:o Personalised Patient Careo Delivering excellent day to day nursing care to frail and elderly patientso Supporting patients with personal care, mobility, nutrition, and comforto Providing meaningful interaction to reduce distress and promote wellbeingo Cognitive Impairment-Focused Careo Supporting patients living with dementia, delirium, and other cognitive disorderso Using person centred approaches to improve communication and reduce anxietyo Contributing to safe monitoring, engagement, and patient reassuranceo Safety & Specialist Careo Promoting best practice in falls preventiono Contributing to pressure ulcer prevention, assessment, and careo Escalating concerns promptly to the nursing teamo Rehabilitation & Discharge Supporto Assisting patients in early mobilisation and basic rehabilitation exercises
