The successful applicant will be on the middle grade on call rota on an approximately 1 in 7 frequency with prospective cover
This is a full-time post for 12 months designed to provide advanced sub-speciality training in cornea under the guidance of Mr Jack Gormley.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join the team as a Corneal Fellow and will work closely with Mr Gormley. The timetable will expose the post holder to clinic experience and theatre experience if competencies allow. The post holder will be part of the senior clinical team to support the delivery of a high quality and specialist corneal service.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of corneal patients in an outpatient setting and will also assist in the operating theatre and will be involved in complex and specialist corneal surgery. Our cornea consultants lead a high-volume corneal transplant centre with an average of 150 corneal transplants a year including all types of corneal transplant surgery (Penetrating, DALK, DSAEK, DMEK) There is also a chance to learn therapeutic and corrective laser and lens refractive surgery through observing at St James laser vision centre which provides regular therapeutic laser for NHS patients including PTK and Femto-assisted Intracorneal ring segments and private refractive corrections including LASEK, femto LASIK and SMILE treatments.
There is likely to be the opportunity for the post-holder to keep their cataract surgical skills up to date by covering theatre lists as well as providing general or emergency clinics where necessary. He or she will complement existing Specialist Trainees and will be also expected to teach and train junior colleagues.
