Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5/6 Biomedical Scientist to join the Clinical Biochemistry Department at Hull which is part of the Scarborough, Hull and York Pathology Service.
You will join a dedicated team delivering an efficient, high-quality diagnostic service. The role involves participation in scientific work for the investigation of pathological disease within a busy Clinical Biochemistry laboratory.
The Biochemistry department is fully equipped with a Beckman Coulter Automated Track, AU5800 series chemistry analysers, and DXI and Roche Immunoassay analysers . The department also has a range of specialist equipment, which includes: Two mass Spectrometers, ICP-MS and HM-JACKarc.
The laboratory is UKAS accredited and committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality and patient care.
This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join a busy department dedicated to providing a high quality, patient centered service.
The successful candidate will be required to participate in the 24/7 shift system.
Applicants who have successfully completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio will be employed on the appropriate AfC Band 6 rate if successful.

Main duties of the job
- To carry out the analysis of patient samples providing a range of diagnostic methods
- To ensure the quality and timeliness of results by use of internal quality controls (IQC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
- To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
- To perform technical validation of patient results.
- To communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users regarding patient results and service updates.
- To undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work.
