Job summary

This role offers a unique chance to deliver high-quality, compassionate care across key departments: Ambulatory Care (AMB), Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Medical Same Day Emergency Care (MSD), and the Emergency Department (ED)--all vital to the Trust's urgent and emergency care pathway.

You'll work in fast-paced, clinically diverse settings, supporting patients with acute conditions. Duties include assisting triage and emergency interventions in ED, short-stay assessments in AMU, and facilitating efficient care in MSD and AMB for same-day diagnostics and procedures.

You'll need strong clinical awareness, adaptability, and commitment to excellence. Responsibilities include collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, contributing to care planning, maintaining accurate documentation, and mentoring junior staff to foster learning and improvement.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Healthcare Support Worker within the Acute and Emergency Floor, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care across several urgent care settings. A significant proportion of patients in these departments are older adults, often presenting with complex medical, cognitive, and social needs.

Your role is essential in ensuring that elderly patients receive dignified, person-centred care that promotes safety, comfort, and independence.

Your role will include but is not limited to:

  • Assist in the assessment and triage of patients across ED, AMU, MSD, and AMB
  • Monitor and record vital signs, escalating concerns appropriately
  • Support patients with personal care, including hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and toileting
  • Assist with clinical procedures such as ECGs, phlebotomy, and wound care under supervision
  • Provide tailored support to older adults, recognising the impact of frailty, dementia, delirium, and sensory impairments
  • Falls prevention
  • Offer reassurance and emotional support to patients experiencing confusion, anxiety, or distress
  • Assist with feeding and hydration, particularly for patients with swallowing difficulties or cognitive decline
  • Liaise with families and carers to understand individual needs and preferences
  • Recognise and report signs of deterioration, safeguarding concerns, or unmet needs
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families, and the MDT
  • Participate in handovers and team briefings
