Consultant Occupational Health Physician

Job summary

A Consultant is a senior and experienced clinician who works autonomously in one of the medical or surgical specialities and manages the delivery of care by other doctors (for example resident and some SAS doctors). Consultants serve as experts in their specialty, and they have responsibility for the care of patients referred to them, even when care is carried out by others. A key aspect of the role is leading multidisciplinary teams delivering care. This involves being able to take an overview of the care pathway and managing other team members accordingly. Consultants are expected to be involved in the teaching and training of students and resident doctors, and to contribute to their specialty field through research and leadership.

Main duties of the job

To, at all times, comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor

o To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.

o To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your clinical director.

o To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of any Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.

o To participate in the Trust's statutory and mandatory training programme

o To be responsible for the clinical management of in and outpatients under your care.

o To maintain personal and professional development.

o To provide advice, as required, to the Executive and Trust Boards and to General Practitioners and other interested parties, on the provision and planning of clinical services locally, regionally and nationally in keeping with confidentiality agreements relating to Trust business.

o To fully participate in clinical governance arrangements across the Trust including participation in clinical audit, research (where appropriate), pursuing an agreed agenda with colleagues and the Trust Board and fully co-operating in implementing the results in order to achieve best practice.

o To participate, on at least an annual basis in consultant appraisal and job planning reviews.

o To comply with Trust policies and procedures where appropriate.

Job responsibilities

The Consultant Occupational Health Physician is a pivotal role within the senior leadership team of the Occupational Health and Staff Wellbeing department, as well as the wider Workforce and Organisational Development Directorate at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Occupational Health and Wellbeing services are provided internally to some 11,500 Trust employed staff as well as external customers, mostly belonging to organisations within the wider Integrated Care System (ICS) and Hull York Medical School (HYMS).

The Consultant Occupational Health Physician is required to see the most complex cases referred into the service as well as providing effective clinical supervision to the team of practitioners and nurses working within the department. The post holder will also be required to contribute to relevant Health and Safety committees and attend meetings with a wide range of stakeholders and service users to provide expert advice.

Individual job plans will be discussed with the post holder on appointment. All job plans are agreed in line with the Trusts Job Planning Principles. This role is for 2 PAs per week (one full working day per week). The successful applicant will have secretarial support and office accommodation. The postholder will have a base of either York or Scarborough, but the vast majority of appointments are completed remotely. They may be required to undertake duties from other premises owned or used by the Trust, and if this is on a regular basis this will be after consultation and due consideration to individual and Trust circumstances.

As a department we are committed to supporting flexible job plans and will work with you to mutually agree your commitment to your activity. We have opportunities to explore teaching, research, and quality improvement projects to enhance our service. Job plans will be reviewed at least annually, following an appraisal meeting. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities and external commitments.

Additional programmed activities may be offered to the post holder, up to a maximum of 2 for full-time posts, taking the maximum total to 12. Any offer of additional programmed activities will be based on the needs of the service and in line with the Trust objectives and will be reviewed on at least an annual basis. A core 1.25 PAs of SPA time is provided per week for consultants job planned for 8PAs and above.
