We are a thriving, cohesive team of 6 consultants looking to expand it's workforce and we welcome applicants with CCT in either Microbiology or joint Microbiology and Infectious diseases and consultant clinical scientists in Microbiology.

This post is to provide additional capacity to support and develop the current microbiology and infection prevention and control provision within the Trust. The post holder will work closely with the existing microbiologists, but the post can be flexible to fit in with the applicant's interests.

The consultant team cover both York and Scarborough hospitals, with an expectation that clinical duties are worked on site as per the agreed job plans. There will be an on-call commitment of 1 in 7 which can be delivered remotely via home working.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work as part of the consultant Microbiologist team covering the York and Scarborough Trust and the associated primary care organisations and GP practices across York and North Yorkshire.

The post is based at York, with an expectation to cover sessions at Scarborough, currently approximately 2 days per month. The role includes diagnostic stewardship, patient report authorisation, clinical liaison service as well as opportunities to participate in MDTs, ward rounds and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) activities. The post holder will be encouraged to develop areas of specialist interest. The Trust runs an outpatient parenteral antimicrobial (OPAT) service, and there may be opportunities to support/expand this service. Lead roles are allocated on rotation based on individual interest and include clinical lead, Infection Control Doctor (ICD), AMS lead and sepsis lead. The final job plan will be agreed with the post-holder, network lead and pathology group director.

The Scarborough, Hull & York Pathology Services (SHYPS) brought together the Pathology services of the York and Scarborough and Hull acute trusts and covers one of the largest geographic areas in the UK. SHYPS was formed in 2021 and is now a maturing network in the latest NHSE assessment. All laboratories in the Network are fully accredited by UKAS accreditation against ISO 15189.
