Job summary

A Transfusion Practitioner (TP) is part of a clinical support team whose purpose is to provide timely and accurate high quality clinical information that will assist service users from the hospital and community, in the establishment of safer Transfusion practices.

You will apply highly specialised professional judgement clinical knowledge and practical skills to complex problem solving and ensure that corrective actions are instigated in the event of non-compliance.

You will work closely with the Consultant Haematologist in charge of blood transfusion, the Transfusion Manager and Senior Biomedical Scientists in the Blood Transfusion department, the Chairperson of the Hospital Transfusion Committee and other appropriate colleagues.

Main duties of the job

  • To directly or indirectly, influence all aspects of care and management of those patients requiring a blood transfusion as well as ensuring safe and effective working practices are developed and implemented across the organisation.
  • Works within national policy frameworks and guidelines i.e. NICE, BSH, BSQR, NBTC and perform transfusion related competency based assessments and undertake National and Local audits of transfusion Practice as required
  • The post holder is required to exercise tact and use persuasion in emotive situations (e.g. advising on blood Transfusion sample collection and blood product administration practice that present risk. The information may not always be well received and may be subject to challenge).
  • Liaise with Biomedical Scientists in the Blood Sciences department sections as necessary to ensure smooth running and continuation of service
  • To give support and specialist advice to nursing and medical staff regarding blood transfusion matters.
  • Collaborate with other Health Care Professionals in hospital to achieve maximum advantage from planned, co-ordinated patient care (e.g., alternatives to blood transfusion and direct for appropriate medical advice if required).
