Job summary

We have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced midiwfe to join our team as a Band 6 Perinatal Mental Health Midwife.

The role will support the Lead Midwife for Perinatal Mental Health (PNMH) in the training and support of women and staff on each unit. The PNMH midwife will be a visible role model, providing clinical support and practical guidance. The post holder will demonstrate an advanced level of PNMH knowledge using current evidence-based research and practice, working alongside the Lead Midwife for PNMH. They will exercise high levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care, adhering to policies and guidelines within maternity and relevant to PNMH. They will be expected to work autonomously, developing a sound understanding of the issues relating to the identification, treatment and management of the client group across the Trust.

The PNMH Midwife will act as a resource for other members of the multi-disciplinary team, facilitating an environment of learning to promote the development of all staff - including midwives, support staff, and medical staff. There will be a requirement to teach, assess, supervise and support midwives, student' midwives, support staff and other health professionals in issues relating to PNMH.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will advise and support completion of competency documents where appropriate for staff ensuring the provision of safe, high quality care. The post holder will also work in collaboration with healthcare colleagues and other educators to ensure that the clinical education and development needs of the non-medical Neonatal workforce are identified and addressed using a variety of teaching and assessment strategies to meet all learning styles.

The postholder will be involved in the monitoring and improving of standards of care through supervision of practice, clinical audit, evidenced based practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues. They will contribute to clinical governance within the service by participating in audit and research as part of the MDT within the field of perinatal mental health.

The post holder will demonstrate strong leadership qualities, be open and transparent and may be designated to take a management responsibility for PNMH queries in the absence of the PNMH Lead Midwife. The post holder may be required to be deployed outside of their normal work setting, depending on clinical risk and service need. The post holder will work within the framework of the NMC Midwives Code of Practice and YSTHFT Guidelines and Protocols.
