Job summary

We are looking for a reliable, confident and highly motivated individual to join our existing experienced plaster room team based in Orthopaedic Outpatients as a Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner. The successful applicant must enjoy working with people and possess good communication skills. You should enjoy the challenge of working in a fast-paced patient environment.

We will offer the successful applicant a tailored training programme. To become a fully qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner which takes two years to complete. It is a requirement to complete at least one full year as a trainee within the plaster room prior to beginning the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) validated course in Bradford.

This post will cover York, Scarborough and Bridlington Hospitals. You will be required to work in the Orthopaedic Outpatient Department with both adults and children, Children's Development Centre, Theatres and the Emergency Department. You may also work on the wards when patients are unable to attend the plaster room.

It is highly desirable to have Orthopaedic knowledge prior to beginning the role, however all patient facing experience will be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • Be expected to assist in carrying out designated forms of care in relation to casting and musculo-skeletal splinting
  • Set and maintain a high standard of patient care, be aware of the broader understanding of patient health and promote health care education. Educate patients concerning their after-care, especially problems associated with casting
  • Communicate and co-operate with all members of the multidisciplinary team and work closely with all staff of relevant departments to ensure effective liaison
  • Maintain complete, accurate and legible records of all agreed and legal documentation as appropriate
  • Ensure all instruments and equipment are maintained in good order and the Plaster Room is kept clean and tidy
  • Apply various Casts after having received instruction from a member of the senior orthopaedic team and under the supervision of a qualified Practitioner
  • Adjust and fit all orthotic appliances
  • Manage own self-directed study and follow BOA syllabus whilst attending the Bradford Casting course - ensuring completion of casting logs and OSCE requirements prior to exam
  • Support the running of clinics when required
