Job summary

We have an opportunity for maternity cover for a Band 7 Highly Specialised Audiologist at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals.

The role will involve:

  • Providing an expert clinical audiological, diagnostic and rehabilitation service for adults with hearing loss, tinnitus, hypercusis, and balance disorders.
  • Paediatric assessments including evoked potentials.
  • Communication of more complex information with respect to rehabilitation for children and their families who present with obscure auditory symptoms related to their hearing problems, which are more complex or non-specific.

Main duties of the job

Auditory Rehabilitation

  • Assess the general auditory (re)habilitative needs of hearing-impaired adults and children with respect to their audiological status, communication skills and social needs.
  • Formulate appropriate management strategies for adults and children based on this information, including advising patients on communication strategies, hearing aids (including appropriate referral to the cochlea implant clinic), assistive listening devises, providing lip reading and auditory training where appropriate.
  • Undertake aural impressions for all age groups working within national and Departmental protocols
  • Assess the benefit derived from hearing aids using subjective and objective measures including information methods, appropriate questionnaires, and insertion gain measurements.
  • Provide ongoing assessment and maintenance for both child and adult hearing-impaired patients.

Diagnostic Audiological Assessment

  • Perform pure tone, impedance, and speech audiometry testing, advising patients and referring clinicians on management plans based on information obtained from these as appropriate.
  • Perform more advanced test procedures.
  • Recommend further investigations as required, either referring to the appropriate member of staff or carrying out the procedures if appropriately trained.
  • Maintain practical knowledge of other forms of Audiological testing (steady state and distortion products).
