Job summary

We currently have an opportunity to join our existing team as Phlebotomist on a 12 month fixed-term basis working up to 37.5 hours per week.

The Phlebotomy Service currently collects more than 250,000 blood samples per year. We provide a Phlebotomy Service to GP surgeries at Tadcaster and Sherburn Medical Centre's, Selby War Memorial Hospital and a new service at the Stadium, Monks Cross. The Phlebotomy Team also work in York Teaching Hospital on the wards and in our Outpatients Department.

We require enthusiastic and motivated team players with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Previous blood taking experience is not essential, as full training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Key duties of the role are as follows:

  • To collect blood samples from patients through venepuncture as requested by clinicians and other appropriately authorised doctors and health professionals.
  • To collect blood samples safely with due respect to the dignity of patients, and the needs of other clinical services.
  • To ensure blood samples are collected in appropriate containers, labelled correctly, and prepared and dispatched to relevant laboratory sections in a timely and correct manner.
  • To contribute to the provision of an efficient, high quality service.

The successful candidate will be expected to work at any of our service sites, therefore the ability to transport yourself to these locations during a normal working day is a requirement of this role.

You will also be expected to cover our service hours on a rota basis which are currently 7.30am - 6pm Monday to Friday, 7.30am - 1pm on a Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.
