Job summary

Do you want to start a new career in care but don't know where to begin?

As an Apprentice Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) you will benefit from a 15 month fully funded and supported Level 2 Apprenticeship in Healthcare Support and earn a competitive apprenticeship salary whilst being part of a team and gaining transferable knowledge and skills.

The learning and assessment element of the apprenticeship will be delivered by Leeds City College, with a blended learning approach.

Competency in Maths and English are required to be accepted onto the apprenticeship, but don't worry if you do not have evidence of this - please see below for your options:

  • If you have evidence, e.g., GCSE certificates, showing that you attained a Grade E or Level 2 or above in Maths and English, or hold a Functional Skills Level 1 Certificate please let us know on your application form and we will contact you and ask you to provide us with these certificates.
  • If you have not attained these levels (or cannot evidence that you have), then we will ask you to undertake a test with Leeds City College on the day of your interview which will allow us to assess your suitability for the role.

Due to UK Government funding rules, you must meet the eligibility criteria, please see the attached document (eligibility for apprenticeship funding) and evidence of acceptable qualifications for further details.

Please note that you must be able to commit to a 4-week full time programme in our Healthcare Academy at the start of your employment.

Main duties of the job

As an Apprentice Healthcare Support Worker at York and Scarborough Hospitals Trust, you will be part of a multi-professional team providing high standards of care to our patients. You will maintain and promote patient independence and dignity to ensure each patient receives a positive experience.

We really appreciate just how daunting starting a new career is, which is why we will provide you with comprehensive training support during your Apprenticeship and this starts with a 4 week programme through our Healthcare Academy where we will help you gain your Care Certificate.

We welcome applications for this exciting Apprenticeship from those who have not worked in care before, alongside school or college leavers looking for their first job role.

You will need to access your own lap-top/tablet or PC (not mobile phone) to join the virtual on-line study sessions. Please see the information attached (HCSW occupational standards) for the L2 Apprenticeship Standard and End Point Assessment.

As a Healthcare Support Worker, you will be expected to work a combination of shifts including nights, weekends and Bank Holidays and typical shifts may be: Early 07:00-15:00 Late 12:00 - 20:00 Long Day 07:00 - 20:00 Twilight 18:00 - 02:00 Night 19:30 - 07:30.
