Job summary

Our Same Day Emergency Care provision is unique in what we do and the way we do things. It's all about trying new ways of working and using our extensive multi-disciplinary team to give as many patients as possible the opportunity of ambulatory care pathways. We have our own medical, nursing and administration teams and we are a distinct clinical area that is separate from the ED and MAU teams, this gives us a dynamic and flexible flavour.

This is an exciting opportunity for any acute, general or emergency consultant to forge a new role.

Main duties of the job

Working in the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) you would be providing same day care for patients who would otherwise be admitted to hospital. The team provides rapid assessment and treatment to adult patients, who are referred by their GP or by the Accident and Emergency department. We work on an exclusion basis and happy to see any one from medical, urology, frailty, and acute oncology presentation. If the patient can ambulate, we will consider their care on our SDEC. This means a huge range of conditions to the usual DVTs to complex acute oncology patients.

The unit is designed to accommodate unwell medical patients whose illness requires a multidisciplinary approach and physiological observations to detect deterioration whilst their illness is being diagnosed or treated. WE have a dynamic therapy team dedicated to front door assessment and discharge and impressive link with radiology to expedite investigations. All with a joint mission to target early discharge.

The service is led and supported by an experienced and dedicated team of consultants, doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Therapists and Pharmacists to provide high quality patient outcome and a positive patient experience.

About us

This is THE time to be joining the Urgent and Emergency Care team at Scarborough Hospital. We are in the process of completing a £47 million capital new build programme that will provide a brand new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (with a combined Critical Care and Medical Level one unit floor above). The build work is underway and is expected to complete by April 2024. Some aspects are already completed (e.g. our brand-new helipad that is designed for all day, all weather flying and can accommodate all helicopters, including rescue helicopters). The project includes a two-storey new build combining and expanding the current emergency department, same day emergency care and the acute medical unit. As well as improving outcomes for the frail elderly, it will also ensure some of the most critically ill patients in the hospital are cared for in one integrated clinical ward environment rather than being moved to other wards.

The new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UEC) will be designed to provide 24/7 urgent and emergency care services to our local population, over a wide geographical area of North and East Yorkshire. We provide Emergency Department (ED) services to Scarborough, Whitby, and Bridlington (on the coast) and inland as far as Malton and Kirkbymoorside (incorporating a large area of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds).
