Job summary

A vacancy has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist with HCPC registration. Those who have already completed their specialist portfolio or equivalent will be eligible for a Band 6 post.

The department is fully equipped with Beckman AU5800 Chemistry analysers, Beckman DXi immunoassay analysers, Beckman Track system, Roche E411 and Advanced Osmometer analyser. It will be a contractual requirement for the successful candidate to participate in the 24/7 shift system.

In addition, as an IBMS approved training laboratory we encourage and support all Band 5 staff to obtain the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Science. For Band 6 staff, we encourage and support staff in achieving IBMS Higher Specialist Diplomas to enable career progression.

The Laboratory is UKAS accredited.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out the analysis of patient samples, quality controls (QC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and departmental Quality Assurance Policy.
  • To ensure that specialist equipment within the area of work is functioning efficiently through good housekeeping, troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.
  • Technical validation of patient results.
  • Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on information of a technical nature.
  • To undertake shift work including evening, weekend and night work. This will involve working mostly alone and includes the provisional authorisation of results that are used for immediate patient management, carrying potentially serious consequences if any errors occur in the process.
