An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to join the busy Research & Development Blood Sciences team within the Scarborough, Hull and York Pathology Service (SHYPS) rotating between Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill sites, as a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist / Trainee Biomedical Scientist.
To qualify for the Biomedical Scientist role applicants must be registered with the HCPC. Individuals applying for a trainee position must have an IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree or be an undergraduate of an IBMS accredited Biomedical Sciences degree course. Full support towards completion of the IBMS portfolio will be given.
Main duties of the job
The candidate will be required to do the following:
- Handle blood, bodily fluids, faeces and tissue samples
- Operate a range of laboratory analysers and equipment.
- Perform, analyse and record a wide range of laboratory investigations and technical procedures relating to the issue of data for clinical trials.
An awareness of Good Clinical Practise (GCP) is required. Post holders will require GCP certification to carry out Clinical Trials work. Certification can be gained when in post, if the candidate is not already certificated.
After completion of required training, the post holder will be required to work alongside existing R&D Blood Sciences staff performing a range of scientific and other procedures to support clinical trials and pathology research and development activity.
The post holder will be required to rotate between Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital. Some weekend work may be required depending on clinical trial requirements.

The successful candidate will receive training to use a number of different analysers such as:
- IDS iSys
- Unicap 250
- HM-JACKarc
- Beckman Coulter AU5822
- Quattro premier LCMS
- HPLC
- Varian Atomic Absorption Spectrometer
- UVikon spectrophotometer
- Menarini Hb9210
Previous experience in a Blood Sciences laboratory would be an advantage, but not essential as full training will be given.
