Job summary

The post holder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality care to patients presenting with acute illness or injury in the Emergency Department, in line with their scope of practice.

They will also participate in a structured training programme to develop the skills and competencies required to undertake the role of an Emergency Department Nurse.

Main duties of the job

Promote effective communication skills to help overcome language or comprehension barriers when discussing complex or sensitive issues related to diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment with patients and their relatives. Communicate clearly and confidently with patients, families, and members of the multidisciplinary team both in person and over the phone.

Demonstrate empathy and compassion consistently when supporting individuals experiencing bereavement or those with a critically ill relative.

Take responsibility for assessing nursing needs and for planning and delivering appropriate care, using clinical observations, patient assessments, and medical requirements, while working in partnership with patients and their families.

Carry out essential treatments and procedures, including dressings, wound closure, personal care (such as washing and toileting), and assisting with patient transfers in wheelchairs, on trolleys, or in beds throughout the department and hospital. Support patient mobility as part of routine duties.

Organise and prioritise your own workload effectively in a busy, noisy environment with frequent interruptions and unpredictable changes in demand.

Ensure all accidents and incidents are reported to the appropriate manager and recorded through the InPhase reporting system, in line with Trust procedures for risk management. Maintain and share uptodate knowledge of research relevant to emergency care.

Take responsibility for regular cleaning of equipment, reporting faults to the shift manager, and removing defective items from use. This includes participating in daily checks and cleaning of equipment and drugs as outlined in the department quality book.

Ensure the safe storage of patients valuables and property while in the A&E department, following Trust policy.

All registered healthcare professionals, including nurses, must comply with SSSA/SLiP standards, acting as practice supervisors as a minimum and progressing to practice assessors after 12 months in the department.

Support the education, training, and development of yourself and colleagues, promoting shared learning and best practice in Emergency Medicine. Maintain compliance with all core and advanced mandatory training required for your role.

Work with the Emergency Department Matron, Practice Development Nurse, and Heads of Nursing to develop and uphold standards of care, aligned with national guidelines and current evidence.

Undertake additional training related to extended nursing roles as required and contribute to the training of others. Maintain effective communication with paramedical services to support coordinated patient care and encourage routine feedback on patient progress.
