Job summary

This position is within the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Department. The successful candidate(s) will be required to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends, as needed, although the current schedule is Monday to Friday.

The post-holder will be responsible for providing direct clinical care to individual patients and groups of patients within their area of practice. After an agreed period, the post-holder may be designated to coordinate the department in the absence of the Department Manager.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervising and teaching junior staff, qualified and unqualified team members, and pre- and post-registration students.

  • Ensuring clinics run efficiently and patients receive a positive experience within the OMFS department.

  • Supporting the Manager in delivering high-quality, person-centred care that promotes patients' independence and well-being.

The post requires flexibility in working hours, including the potential for evening and weekend shifts, which will be rotated into the schedule as necessary.

As a Registered Nurse in our department, you will play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of care expected in our centre of excellence.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a professional role model to junior staff and demonstrate leadership qualities.
  • Provide expert clinical knowledge and skills within the department.
  • Work with the department manager and nursing team to develop and promote best nursing practice.
  • To coordinate the day-to-day running of clinics, assisting and supporting team members in all OMFS.
  • To be able to prepare clinical areas for clinics including clinics OMFS but to also be aware of other departments areas where rotation maybe required i.e, ENT, cardiology & Main OPD and have an awareness and competence of the decontamination procedures and policies.
  • To be able to assist the clinicians in undertaking sterile procedures including minor procedure clinics, fine needle biopsies, core biopsies, and nasal endoscopes.
  • To be aware of and take responsibility for the appropriate and safe storage of substances hazardous to health i.e. formalin and liquid nitrogen.
  • To have an awareness of the HSSD track and trace systems and the importance of decontamination processes.
  • To be competent or working towards competency in wound dressings including VAC dressings and compression dressings if required.
  • Maintain a high standard of clinical work when carrying out nursing procedures.
  • Responsible for the safe custody of medication, including checking and administration.
  • Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework, you will motivate colleagues, champion service user safety and dignity and drive continuous improvement.
