Job summary

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Higher Biomedical Support Worker to join our dynamic and welcoming laboratory team at the Luton and Dunstable site. This is a Bank position designed to cover a part-time vacancy of 22.5 hours per week, offering an excellent opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a fast-paced and supportive clinical environment.

The successful candidate will play a vital role within the Blood Sciences Specimen Referral Service (SRS) and the Immunology Department, providing essential support to Biomedical Scientists and Senior BMS staff as needed. Our department is proud to hold UKAS accreditation and IBMS/HCPC training status, and we are among a select group of organisations recognised by the National School of Healthcare Science for accredited training in Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, and Transfusion Science.

With a strong commitment to service development, we continue to expand our on-site testing capabilities and integrate with wider healthcare services to enhance patient care. The role operates within core hours, Monday to Friday, from 08:40 to 17:10.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will rotate between the Specimen Referral Service section of Blood Sciences and the Immunology department. They will be expected to:

prepare, package and dispatch Specimen Referral Service (SRS)samples to reference laboratories, and enter SRS patient results into the Laboratory Information Management System, in accordance with departmental SOP ensuring statutory regulations are met in the transport of specimens.

perform maintenance and set up the analysers in Immunology, prepare samples for analysis, and load and unload samples.

contribute to the day to day operations and assist within technical aspects of the service.

assist BMS and senior laboratory BMS in the delivery of a high quality, efficient and effective service, through the Quality Management System [QMS].

follow policies and procedures ensuring that the service complies with current UKAS standards, national and European legislation and discipline specific regulatory bodies.
