Job summary
We are delighted to be able to offer a Locum Consultant post in Emergency Medicine at Luton & Dunstable Hospital (L&D) in Bedfordshire. This post is a 12 months fixed term post to support the call before you convey (CBYC) project which launched in March 2025. The successful post holder will be a welcome addition to our existing consultant team in the emergency department (ED) to meet the needs of our local population.
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic consultant to join our progressive and energetic team in the Emergency Department in order to continue to deliver the highest quality care and maintain our position as one of the leading Emergency Departments in the East of England.
This post will facilitate on-going clinical leadership and input at a consultant level to the Emergency Department and enhance the care of patients with acute problems. The Trust would welcome any appointee able to enhance the overall development of emergency care across the Trust in collaboration with other departments or specialities. Colleagues who have a sub specialty interest or accreditation will have the opportunity to continue this interest subject to negotiation. Two current consultants have dual accreditation - one in Intensive Care and one in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

Main duties of the job
The Key tasks for this role are;
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital.
- To deliver a high quality emergency medicine service.
- To share with colleagues the responsibility for the day-to-day management of all patients in the Emergency Department.
- To participate in the delivery of on-call.
- To participate in teaching and training of intermediate medical staff, junior medical staff, nursing staff, medical students and paramedical staff.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
- To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD)
We seek a consultant who has the vision, ambition and drive to work alongside the existing team to continue on this progressive journey. The CBYC project is one such example of transformation work happening within our system, to reduce attendances at ED and safely manage patients at home in line with the national and local health strategy. The post is based at L&D with opportunity to work at the unscheduled care hub.
We have trauma unit capabilities and are a strategically important hospital run by Bedfordshire hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
A detailed job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate, integrating existing capacity and acknowledging the need to focus on the delivery of a core service. Other aspects of programmed and supporting activities will be negotiated.
