Job summary
There is an opportunity within Department of Elderly Care for a Practice Development Nurse to work closely with the Matron and Clinical Education Team to support and develop registered and unregistered nursing staff, enabling them to deliver high standards of patient care. The wards within our DME Service Line are dynamic and work very closely with specialist nursing teams.
The Practice Development role will support staff during preceptorship, international recruits who are undertaking their NMC OSCE and alongside the Ward Managers monitor and improve mandatory training compliance as well as developing competencies and development plans for staff in Band 2-6 roles.
We have a supportive practice development and education team network and full support will be given for this role.
Main duties of the job
This role will support 5 different wards (Archer Unit, Arnold Whitchurch Ward, Elizabeth Ward, Harpur ward and Russell Ward) at the Bedford site and therefore you will need to demonstrate excellent time management and prioritisation skills. You will be required to demonstrate proven clinical and leadership skills across medical specialties. Experience of providing support for clinical education projects would be an advantage.
You will be expected to share learning across all wards in DME and liaise directly with the Matron for clinical direction. In addition, you will report to the Professional Development Lead, identifying, applying and reporting on educational strategies in practice.
As you will be required to work and support nursing staff at various career stages, you will be required to have had experience of supporting staff whether on formal training programmes or in the workplace.

- To be responsible for the continuing specialist professional development and overall clinical performance of all staff in DME Medicine, in conjunction with ward managers.
- To provide specialist nursing advice (with support from the CNS team) to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers in conjunction with the multi-professional team, in line with local and national directives.
- To take the lead on standard of care issues in relation to benchmarking, auditing and action planning, supporting the nursing team and providing feedback to ward managers, the Matron and Head of Practice and Education
- To work closely with other clinical educators/PDNs throughout the trust ensuring a cohesive approach to practice education within the different clinical areas.
- To teach, develop and supervise all levels of staff undertaking clinical practice in Medicine. This includes support workers, overseas nurses seeking NMC registration, registered nurses and students on clinical placements.
- To support a preceptorship program for newly qualified nurses in DME Medicine
- To ensure practice in all areas of Medicine is evidence based and reflects current trends.
- To work jointly with the Trust and HEIs to organise and provide educational programmes and training for staff directly involved in the care of patients undergoing Surgery.
